Taking DB-201: SQL Server 2008/2012 for Developers first is recommended

Who this course is for

  • Computing students.
  • Anyone interested in using .NET to build websites or desktop applications for Windows.

Worth knowing

This course covers the principles and the fundamentals of programming in the language named, and takes you to a very advanced level of working in it. What it does not cover is that language's use for building websites or Windows desktop software, but it is a required first stage before either of those can be studied.

Shaimaa Eid
Trainer and web developer

Shaimaa began programming in 2002, writing statistical applications in C, and moved on to Visual C#. In 2006 she started building web applications on PHP and open source software. She holds a number of Microsoft certifications, Microsoft Certified Trainer and Microsoft Certified Solutions Developer for the web among them. She has years of practical experience building websites and web applications and running development teams and software projects, and has held several posts at software houses, most recently eCoda Solutions, where she is currently development team manager. Alongside all of that, and since 2004 in particular, she has prepared and taught a long list of specialist courses in website design and development at a number of well-regarded academies and training centres.

Waleed Mohamed
Waleed Mohamed
Managing director and database developer

Waleed started on computer science and programming at around eleven years old, on the old Q-Basic, and has worked with a long list of programming, database and general systems technologies ever since. He is now managing director of the software house Code-Times, Ltd, specialising in systems analysis, MS SQL Server database development, and building large applications on MS .NET for both the web and Windows. At 7dash he currently runs the training departments and designs and delivers a range of specialist computer science programmes on his own terms, aiming through them at training content that is closer to the real working practice of software companies than to an academic syllabus with no regard for how the material is actually applied.

The questions we are asked most about this programme

  • Why is the content of this course not folded into the other courses on web or Windows programming ?
  • Most of the .net programming courses build on exactly this material, because you have to understand how programming works before using any of the languages or libraries that sit on top of it: ASP.net for internet applications, Windows Forms for Windows software, and the rest of them. Folding this content into every follow-on .net course would mean repeating it, particularly for anyone who wants to take up more than one of those products.
  • Can I start on ASP.net for web applications, or Windows Forms for Windows software, without knowing the content of this course
  • No. Every one of those products rests entirely on the programming language itself, which this course teaches in detail.
